Our Mission
Ruff Ranch Sanctuary is a small, all-volunteer 501(c)(3) canine sanctuary providing a safe, lifelong home for dogs who need it most.
Our mission is to give dogs who may not thrive in a traditional shelter or home environment the space, care, stability, and freedom to simply be themselves. Many of the dogs who come to Ruff Ranch have faced abuse, neglect, age or health challenges, behavioral issues, or the risk of euthanasia.
We have seen firsthand how dogs can transform when they leave the stress of a kennel environment and are given time, patience, veterinary care, plenty of space, and the opportunity to live on their own terms.
Our focus is sanctuary and lifelong care. For dogs who can safely and happily transition to an exceptional adoptive home, adoption may still be an option. For those who cannot, Ruff Ranch is their home for life.
Ruff Ranch Sanctuary is entirely volunteer-run and receives no government funding. We are a publicly recognized nonprofit organization under IRS Section 501(c)(3), Tax ID 47-3338660.

Juliet
Bob
Romeo
Juliet’s story with Ruff Ranch began the day she was born. She was one of nine puppies born to Emma, and as a baby, she left us for what we thought would be her forever home.
Thirteen years later, Juliet came back.
Her family was starting a family of their own and, with children entering the picture, they decided they could no longer keep her. After spending virtually her entire life in one home, Juliet was understandably bewildered by suddenly finding herself somewhere new.
But to us, she wasn’t new at all. She was Emma’s daughter, and we were happy to welcome her home.
Today, Juliet is a very senior girl who has lost much of her hearing, but she still finds plenty to enjoy in every day. She loves taking walks outside, relaxing in the fresh air, and spending time surrounded by her dog and cat friends.
At Ruff Ranch, we believe senior dogs deserve security, comfort, companionship, and love for however much time they have left. Juliet will never have to wonder where she belongs again. She is home, and we love her dearly.
Bob’s story is a heartbreaking example of how easily a wonderful dog can be misunderstood.
He was purchased as a puppy and spent the first four years of his life with a family. But Bob had accidents in the house, and eventually his owners decided they could no longer live with the problem. They took him to be euthanized.
That’s how Bob found his way to Ruff Ranch.
Here, no one expected him to be perfect. We treated him with kindness, gave him time to adjust, and introduced him to a different way of living. Bob quickly learned how to use the dog doors, giving him the freedom to go outside whenever he needs to.
And guess what? Bob doesn’t have accidents.
It turned out that he didn’t need to lose his life over a behavior problem. He needed an environment that worked for him.
Today, Bob is a happy, affectionate little Jack Russell who is deeply attached to his humans and absolutely loves being part of a big pack. He may be the tiniest canine resident at Ruff Ranch, but no one has told Bob that.
In fact, he has appointed himself mayor.
He keeps tabs on everyone, makes sure he’s included in whatever is happening, and carries himself with the confidence of a dog ten times his size.
Bob came frighteningly close to losing his life because he didn’t fit into someone else’s expectations. At Ruff Ranch, he doesn’t have to. He has a home designed to meet him where he is, a pack to call his own, humans he adores, and an important ranch to run.
Romeo’s story began in a rural Virginia shelter, where he faced a frightening start to life. A parvovirus outbreak swept through the shelter, and Romeo was one of only a few dogs who survived.
Thankfully, the wonderful people at Rescue and RemEmber in Wytheville, Virginia stepped in. They specialize in helping dogs coming from difficult situations, and they saved Romeo when he needed them most. Once he was stable, they brought him to Ruff Ranch to finish his recovery and begin the next chapter of his life.
And what a recovery it has been.
The fragile dog who survived parvo has grown into one of Ruff Ranch’s top athletes. Romeo spends his days running, playing, exploring, and keeping up with his best friend, Bear. The two are happiest when they’re outside together, making the most of all the space they have to just be dogs.
Romeo’s life could have ended before it really had a chance to begin. Instead, thanks to Rescue and RemEmber and the people who refused to give up on him, he got his chance.
Now he’s strong, healthy, ridiculously athletic, and very busy enjoying life with his bestie.
And Romeo isn’t the only Ruff Ranch resident who came to us through Rescue and RemEmber. Leo did too. We’re incredibly grateful for rescue partners like them who step into difficult situations and give dogs like Romeo and Leo the chance to find out just how good life can be.
Leo
Bleu
Bear
When Leo came to Ruff Ranch, he had been living in a home without electricity and was in terrible physical condition. Mange had taken nearly all of his fur, and his damaged skin left him constantly scratching and itching. He was desperately uncomfortable and needed help.
We got Leo the veterinary care he needed and gave him time to heal. Slowly, his skin recovered and his fur began to grow back. He also underwent extensive dental work and had most of his teeth removed, giving him relief from another source of pain.
You would hardly recognize that dog today.
Leo now has a gorgeous, full, fluffy coat, which makes perfect sense since his DNA results revealed that he’s a Husky mix. And while he may be part Husky, he has also taken on another important role at Ruff Ranch: cat bed.
Our cats absolutely adore Leo and regularly curl up against his big, soft coat for a nap. Leo is perfectly happy to oblige.
His transformation is a wonderful example of what can happen when a dog who has lived with discomfort and neglect finally gets the medical care, patience, and security he deserves. Leo doesn’t have many teeth, but he has plenty of fur, a whole collection of feline cuddle buddies, and a home where he will always be loved.
Before coming to Ruff Ranch, Bleu spent most of his life confined to a crate.
His former guardians worked long days, so Bleu was crated for as many as 12 hours at a time. Because they were worried he would urinate in the crate, they withheld water from him. Then, after spending the day confined, Bleu was put back in his crate overnight.
It was no life for a dog, and that kind of extreme confinement took its toll. Bleu arrived at Ruff Ranch with a lot of pent-up energy and behaviors that came from spending far too much of his life with nowhere to go and nothing to do.
His life looks very different now.
There isn't a crate in sight. Bleu has space to run, jump, play, explore, and burn off all that wonderful energy. He gets affection when he wants it, freedom to move around, and something that should never have been denied to him: fresh water whenever he's thirsty.
Watching Bleu race around Ruff Ranch and throw himself wholeheartedly into play is a joy. He's making up for lost time, and we love seeing him discover just how much fun life can be.
Bleu spent far too long with his world measured by the walls of a crate. Now his world is nine fenced acres, a home full of friends, and the freedom to choose where he wants to be.
And he is loving every minute of it.
Bear is a big dog who needed a bigger life.
A Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix, Bear was living in an apartment in Northern Virginia. He had a home, but it simply wasn’t the right environment for a dog his size, energy, and personality. Bear needed room to roam, explore, run, and just be a dog.
That’s exactly what he found at Ruff Ranch.
And then he found Romeo.
From the time the two met, Bear and Romeo have been inseparable. They spend their days running, wrestling, exploring the woods, and generally making full use of everything Ruff Ranch has to offer.
With dog doors that allow them to choose when they want to be inside or out and nine fenced acres of wooded terrain to explore, Bear finally has the freedom and space he needs. And more often than not, Romeo is right there beside him.
Bear’s story is a reminder that sometimes a dog doesn’t need to be “fixed.” He just needs an environment that fits who he is.
For Bear, that means plenty of space, the freedom to make his own choices, and a best friend who is always ready for the next adventure. At Ruff Ranch, he found all three.
Gus
Blaze
Julia
Gus is one of those dogs who is almost perfect in every way. Sweet, gentle, exceptionally well behaved, and incredibly loving.
There’s just one thing Gus would like everyone to understand: he does not want to hang out with other dogs.
And that’s okay.
As a senior, Gus has earned the right to know what he likes and, just as importantly, what he doesn’t. At Ruff Ranch, he has the space and freedom to relax, roam, and enjoy his days without worrying about unexpectedly encountering another dog. We can give him an environment that works for him rather than expecting him to fit into one that doesn’t.
Interestingly, Gus feels very differently about cats. He loves them, especially kittens.
Whenever foster kittens come to stay at Ruff Ranch, Gus happily takes on the role of Uncle Gus. He is gentle and patient with the little ones and gives them a safe, warm canine friend while they wait for homes of their own.
Gus is a wonderful example of why sanctuary can be so important. A dog doesn’t have to love other dogs to have a rich, happy life. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is listen to what an animal is telling us and give them the life that makes them feel safe.
For Gus, that means peaceful days at the ranch, plenty of room to roam, no unwanted canine company, and a steady supply of kittens to love.
We think that sounds pretty perfect.
Blaze came to Ruff Ranch as a tiny orange kitten who had already endured more than any baby should.
The entire left side of his little body had been badly injured. His tail was broken, his leg was broken, and one of his eyes no longer worked. He needed extensive care, and we weren’t sure what his future would look like.
But Blaze had other ideas.
We got him the surgeries and veterinary treatment he needed, along with laser and light therapy to help his body heal. Through all of it, this fierce little kitten just kept going.
Today, Blaze roams around Ruff Ranch like he owns the place.
Because, as far as Blaze is concerned, he does.
He may have some lasting effects from his injuries, but they certainly haven’t affected his confidence. Blaze is bold, curious, affectionate, and completely at home among the dogs and cats of Ruff Ranch. He especially loves being part of the larger animal family and has absolutely no concerns about being one of the smaller residents.
Blaze arrived with a broken tail, a broken leg, and a damaged eye. What wasn’t broken was his spirit.
He’s a tough little survivor with a huge personality who approaches life on his own terms. He struts through the house, hangs out with his dog and cat friends, and generally supervises ranch operations like a tiny orange boss.
And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Julia came to Ruff Ranch for a very important reason: Blaze needed a friend.
After everything Blaze had been through as a tiny kitten, we wanted him to have a feline companion to grow up with. Julia happily accepted the assignment, and she has been looking after him ever since.
The two are inseparable. Julia grooms Blaze, cuddles with him, keeps an eye on him, and is always nearby. She seems to understand that her buddy needs a little extra looking after, and she takes her job very seriously.
But Julia has plenty of love to go around.
She is one of the most affectionate residents at Ruff Ranch and has apparently never learned that cats are supposed to be selective about their friends. Human? She loves you. Cat? Absolutely. Dog? New best friend.
Julia approaches just about everyone she meets as though they’ve been friends for years.
She may have originally joined Ruff Ranch to be Blaze’s companion, but Julia quickly became much more than that. She is a friend to everyone, a caretaker to her best buddy, and a wonderfully loving part of the Ruff Ranch family.
Blaze may roam the house like the boss, but we’re pretty sure Julia is the one quietly looking after him behind the scenes.
Gilligan
Ophelia
Buttons
Gilligan was never supposed to stay at Ruff Ranch.
He came to us as a foster kitten along with the rest of his litter. The plan was to care for them, help them grow, and eventually send them on to their forever homes.
But then panleukopenia struck.
Gilligan was the only kitten in his litter to survive.
And that was just the beginning of what this little guy would overcome. Along the way, Gilligan battled mycoplasma, suffered a broken hip, and was diagnosed with FIV. Again and again, this tiny black kitten faced something that could have knocked him down. And again and again, he fought his way through it.
We fought alongside him.
After everything we had been through together, there was simply no way we could let him go. Somewhere between the medications, vet visits, worry, recovery, and countless cuddles, our foster kitten had become family.
Gilligan is a survivor, but his medical history isn't what defines him. He is an incredibly sweet, loving cat who adores his humans and is completely at home among his dog and cat family at Ruff Ranch.
He lost his entire litter and faced more medical challenges as a kitten than most animals will experience in a lifetime. Yet somehow, Gilligan came through it all with an enormous capacity for love.
Some fosters are simply meant to stay.
Gilligan is one of them.
Ophelia came to Ruff Ranch because of a chance encounter that probably wasn’t chance at all.
Before we knew that Gilligan was going to become a permanent member of our family, we took him to an adoption event. His crate happened to be next to another cat waiting for a home. Her name was Ophelia.
It didn’t take long for her to get our attention.
Ophelia was incredibly sweet, and she reminded Ron of a beloved cat he had shared his life with in the past. We also learned that she had asthma, something that could make finding the right home a little more challenging.
We went to the event thinking we might find a home for a cat. Instead, we came home with another one.
Ophelia settled into life at Ruff Ranch beautifully. She loves her humans and feline family, but her favorite companions might surprise you: Ophelia absolutely adores dogs. Given the choice of who to hang out with, she is very likely to pick one of her canine friends.
Her asthma is simply part of who she is and something we manage so she can get on with the important business of enjoying her life.
Gilligan never did find a new family at that adoption event. Neither did Ophelia.
Instead, they both ended up exactly where they belonged.
Buttons didn’t have to travel very far to find her way to Ruff Ranch.
She was living in a neighbor’s barn, but with a dog on the property who wasn’t particularly fond of cats, it wasn’t the safest place for her to call home. So we brought her to Ruff Ranch.
Buttons apparently took that to mean she was now in charge.
She settled in immediately, made herself completely at home with the other cats, and eventually assumed her rightful position as leader of the pride.
Buttons is brave, confident, and wonderfully affectionate. She knows exactly what she wants, isn’t easily intimidated, and carries herself with the quiet assurance of a cat who knows she belongs.
At Ruff Ranch, she has a safe home, plenty of feline companions, and dogs who understand that cats are family too.
Buttons may have started out as a barn cat from down the road, but she quickly became an important part of the Ruff Ranch family. Every pride needs a leader.
